Scottish Disability Sport (formerly the Scottish Sports Association for Disabled People (SSAD)) was formed in 1962 to provide facilities for, and to encourage the development of sport and physical recreation for disabled people. Scottish Disability Sport has now acted as the governing and co-ordinating body of all sports for all people with a disability for over thirty years.
SDS coordinates programmes for individuals with physical, sensory and learning disabilities. Opportunities are provided for males and females of all ages and abilities. Opportunities are offered to athletes who strive for international honours – of which Paralympic medals are the pinnacle - as well as to individuals who are interested purely in taking part in a physical recreation programme.
SDS has in place a strategic plan, "Towards London and Beyond, 2006 - 2012", which provides a framework for all its operations. “Towards London and Beyond” highlights four strategic goals which influence its work. These goals will:
- Support the development of a sporting pathway for young people with physical, sensory or learning disabilities
- Encourage and support Scottish athletes with a disability to realise their full potential in sport
- Recruit new partners involved in physical activity and/or disability and further develop existing partnerships
- Work with regional coaching partnerships to access the very best of education and leadership for athletes and volunteers
- SDS introduces individuals with disabilities to sport through its local development programmes at foundation and participation level.
- sportscotland invests in SDS and is proud to be a supporter of this positive and proactive organisation.
