Design and construction

Body Text

sportscotland offers advice on design and construction of sports facilities, taking particular account of matters such as disability access.

We have published technical digests that offer guidance on the planning, design and management of sports buildings including swimming pools, sports halls and changing accommodation.

Guidance for school sports facilities

sportscotland has published a series of design guides that aim to help local authorities provide quality school sports facilities suitable for both school and wider community use.

These have been produced with the help of many practitioners and experts in the field of physical education and school sport, and in consultation with all the key agencies in this field.

Education authorities will find the documents invaluable as they seek to meet the challenge of providing a minimum of two hours of physical education per week for every child, as announced by Education Minister Peter Peacock on 14 June 2004.

Such an increase in the amount of PE received by children will in many schools have implications for the level of sports facilities required.

The design guides provide advice on how to calculate the physical education facility requirements for any given primary or secondary school, and give detailed design guidance on the teaching and ancillary spaces required.

The documents also give technical advice on how to ensure school facilities can be used by the wider community.

Facilities demonstration programme

The facilities demonstration programme supports projects and ideas that demonstrate cost-effective provision through examples of good design, management and planning.

Best practice and lessons learned can then be shared by Scotland’s sporting community.
