Body Text

sportscotland is a Lottery award distributor and also provides Exchequer funding. Our current funding programmes for sports facilities are:

Building for Sport

This programme replaced the Sports facilities programme as of March 2004. The new programme is divided into:

1. Community facilities covering the provision or upgrading of all facilities for the general community. Proposals will be led mainly by local authorities, clubs, trusts and similar organisations.

2. Training and competition facilities, which considers applications relating to the provision or upgrading of facilities at centres designated as national / regional facilities by the relevant national governing body for sport.

National and regional sports facilities strategy

sportscotland and the Scottish Executive are working together with our partners to develop a network of multi-sports facilities across Scotland.

The aim is to address major facilities needs for a number of key sports by providing a network of quality facilities for training and competition, designed to support the needs of Scotland’s elite athletes. The facilities will also be open for community use and, in particular, will provide increased opportunities for young people to take part in sport and physical activity.

The strategy seeks to deliver:

  • Regional indoor training facilities including indoor football pitches, athletics training areas and possibly sports halls;
  • A national indoor sports arena;
  • Municipal stadia for rugby and athletics;
  • Refurbishment of the Royal Commonwealth Pool;
  • A national curling academy;
  • An indoor velodrome for cycling

The facilities will serve the geographic areas covered by the Area Institutes of Sport:

  • Central
  • East
  • West
  • Grampian
  • Highland
  • Tayside and Fife

Andy Kerr, Minister of Finance and Public Services announced in July 2004 that £49.5 million of public money has been allocated to this undertaking. Awards have been made to projects in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Stirling, Falkirk and Ravenscraig. The delivery of the strategy is however heavily dependent on local authorities and others working in partnership to contribute to capital and revenue costs. We are working with our partners to deliver these projects.
