SGB Equity Awareness Raising Workshops

Body Text

On 28th and 29th July 2005, sportscotland, in partnership with Scottish Disability Sport and Management & Equality Training Ltd., hosted two Equity in Sport introductory awareness sessions, aimed at the Scottish Governing Bodies and their affiliated clubs who are involved in the implementation of the Equity Standard for sport.

These introductory sessions were designed to begin to raise the awareness of key governing body staff and volunteers in the area of equity in sport and provide information to governing bodies as part of their work in implementing the Equity Standard. The sessions were intentionally aimed at providing introductory level information for members of SGBs not already involved in the implementation of the Standard. sportscotland and VAGA Associates will follow this session up with more in-depth sessions on specific equity issues and on the implementation of the Equity Standard, in response to individual requests from governing bodies. Governing bodies can contact sportscotland's Ethics Manager, Jill Bennett on jill.bennett@sportscotland.org.uk or 0131 317 7200 to arrange further sessions.

The sessions included information on the legislative context, current issues, and the background to the Equity Standard, and also included specific sessions on gender equality, race equality, and barriers facing athletes with a disability.

The sessions were attended by almost 40 attendees from seven of the twelve governing bodies involved in the pilot.

The presentations and handouts from the session can be downloaded by clicking on the links on the right hand side of this page.
