Physical education

Body Text

Physical education is an occupation both highly rewarding and extremely demanding. It combines considerable physical demands with all the commitment, patience and skill required of an academic teacher.

In addition to teaching in schools, qualified physical education teachers often find work in sports centres and private sports clubs.

The most common route to teaching PE in Scotland is to read for a BEd (Hons) degree in Physical Education. You can do this at Edinburgh University and Stirling University.

Following training all teachers must complete a two-year 'on-the-job' probationary period before full registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland.

For more detailed information, you can contact the General Teaching Council for Scotland, your local careers service or your guidance teacher if you are still at school.
