Professional sport can be glamorous and financially very rewarding. However, an outstanding talent is needed, even to get started.

Most professionals enter the elite ranks after performing as a top-level amateur, usually working up from school or club level to national competition.

All the major sports are administered by their governing body, which will advise on the best way to progress as a professional.

Those who succeed in professional sport must, in many sports, be prepared for a short playing career.

Consequently, all sports people need a second career to turn to once their playing days are over. If they are sensible they will not neglect this until after they are retired. They might even consider one of the occupations listed on this website.
