The Scottish National Sports Centre Glenmore Lodge: Nightwatch Training Scheme

Body Text

Objective

To offer four people the opportunity of gaining one years work experience in the field of outdoor education and the running of a residential outdoor centre.

The Scheme

We are not particularly seeking future mountaineering and kayaking stars.  We are concerned with fostering high quality professional outdoor instruction in the UK.

Those selected will usually have had some work experience in outdoor education and hold a couple of basic National Governing Body (NGB) awards such as ML summer, SPA and some kayaking/ canoeing qualifications or experience.  A year at Glenmore Lodge is not something you should consider lightly.  Glenmore Lodge is not a typical residential outdoor centre; much of our work is training and assessing adults for NGB awards.  We do not work with young people on personal development and environmental education programmes, there is therefore little opportunity for hands on instructing, in this respect the centre is not particularly representative of the wider industry.

There is much day to day work around the centre, in the stores and the grounds as well as staffing the reception desk every night of the year between the four of you.  You will however be paid a small annual salary of approximately £5,435.00 from which you will pay your basic living expenses (food and accommodation).  This means you will not pay tax unless you do additional work, however, you will not be paying National Insurance for a year.  You will have access to a wide range of free training opportunities probably worth £3,000.00 - £4,000.00.  In your free time you will be expected to gain experience in order to complete a broad range of NGB training courses in mountaineering, kayaking /canoeing, and mountain biking at an intermediate level e.g. L3 coach, winter ML etc.

The scheme will run from around 19 April 2009 until 19 April the following year.  You must be free to start from 19 April 2009.  If you are not free for these dates due to other commitments, college courses, etc. please do not apply this year.

Who Should Apply

We usually receive around 60 applications and interview 12 applicants for the 4 posts.  We are looking for responsible individuals with a variety of relevant outdoor experience who will work together as a team of four.  We will therefore select people based on a balanced team structure of complementary skills and character.

Disclosure Scotland Check

Candidates selected for interview will be required to complete a Self Declaration Form, which will be sent separately.  sportscotland’s National Centres are classified as ‘educational establishments’ for the purposes of the Protection of Children (Scotland) Act 2003 and as such this post is exempted in terms of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exclusions and Exceptions) (Scotland) Order 2003 (as amended).  We will request an Enhanced Disclosure Scotland check to be carried out for the successful candidate.

Please refer to www.disclosurescotland.co.uk to view the Disclosure Scotland Code of Practice and further information, if required.
