Getting started in coaching

Coaching can occur anywhere, but commonly it takes place in sports clubs and community facilities like schools, leisure centres, community spaces and Community Sport Hubs.

The first step to coaching is often to become involved as an assistant and gain experience under the direct supervision of a more qualified coach. You do not need to have a qualification to assist, but your deployer will have minimum standards which may include the opportunity for you to attend a local introductory course in the sport or activity you wish to volunteer or a Sports Governing Body coach education course depending on the level at which you wish to coach.

If you can offer one hour per week or want to do more, you should first of all make contact with an employer/deployer i.e. the club, hub or active schools team you are interested in.
